Welcome Back and Happy National Cake Day!

Welcome back guys!

We hope everyone had wonderful vacations! Stay tuned (and send us your pics) for a Thanksgiving post tomorrow. In the meantime, IT’S NATIONAL CAKE DAY! We love this time of year. The eating holidays never seem to end.

In order to celebrate this amazing holiday, we decided to tell you about all our favorite cakes (and cake-like items) in Middletown. Here’s the rundown:

Vanilla cake with raspberry filling, carrot cake, and rainbow cookie cake from Fusion Bakery and Patisserie

Fusion makes a mean cake. These are only a few of our favorites. The vanilla cake with raspberry filling is exceptionally well-made, and the fresh frosting and raspberry  add the perfect level of sweetness. The carrot cake, probably Fusion’s most famous item, has a mild spice. The moist, fluffy cake is perfectly complemented by the light cream cheese frosting, and the rainbow cookie cake? Don’t even get us started. This baby flaunts perfect proportions of raspberry jam, chocolate, and a delightful almond flavor.

Peanut butter and jelly cupcake from NoRA Cupcake Company

So maybe they’re not traditional cakes, or traditional anythings for that matter, but there’s no doubt that NoRA cupcakes are delicious. One of our favorites is the peanut butter and jelly flavor. It starts out right- with a big, peanut butter filled pretzel sitting atop a glob of the delicious frosting. The cake itself is dense and flavorful, and the jelly filling is pretty fantastic. Read our full review on the cupcake here.

Cinnamon raspberry chocolate chip pound cake from O’Rourke’s

So maybe it’s not really “cake”, but this is a Middletown must-have. The somewhat crisp exterior dissolves into a soft, melt in your mouth dough, with just enough cinnamon flavor. Read our full review on the pound cake here.

Grilled coffee cake muffin from Brew Bakers

Again, some people may not consider this to be fitting, but hey! The word “cake” is part of the name! The grilling process enhances the already exquisite texture of this muffin, so the top crunches into a melty, gooey interior. When warm, the cinnamon sugar swirls glisten, their taste seeming almost heightened by the heat. Read more about the grilled coffee cake muffin here.

Strawberry shortcake and cream puff cake at Sweet Harmony Cafe and Bakery

Don’t be decieved by the lack of posts on Sweet Harmony. Although we haven’t had the time to visit this little treasure of an eatery yet this year, it’s a wonderful place. During our visit, we got the strawberry shortcake and cream puff cake, both were induldgent, perfectly textured, and incredibly delicious. Sweet Harmony will be closing on December 29th, so make sure to get there soon! Believe us, it’s worth it.

Happy national cake day everybody! We hope you enjoyed some delicious desserts today.

An Ode to Quick Breads: Raspberry White Chocolate Chip Scone from Fusion Bakery and Patisserie

I adore the combination of red berries and white chocolate chips. The sweet, tart tang of the raspberries in comparison to the super sweet white chocolate, the soft texture of the fruit is a perfect foil for the wonderful bite of the hard little white chocolate morsels. Yes, regardless of the medium, this is a winning combination. That being said, I admit to being partial to quick breads.

Today’s raspberry white chocolate chip scone at Fusion Bakery was a true work of art. It started out with a huge, and I’m talking monster-size piece of dough. Half would be more than enough for an indulgent breakfast or snack. The exterior? Perfection. It is generously covered with crystallized sugar, and baked to a crisp, so that it adopts a wonderfully exciting crunch, that melts into the soft, moist, dough.

Fusion is always generous with their fillings, and this number is no exception. Once cut open, the item transforms from baked good to modern sculpture, an abstractly shaped glob, with swirls of red climbing through a somewhat textured, off white background, and chunks of whiteness, dancing throughout the interior, sticking their little heads out, and giving you no doubt in the world of their presence. When you get a bite that includes the fruit, white chocolate, and sugar coated exterior, the results are ecstatic.

Fusion has never failed me, but today, today they have gone about and beyond. I would highly recommend that you hurry down to get one of these divine creations before they’re all gone.

Bravo Fusion, on a truly remarkable quick bread.

Rainy Day Delights: Pumpkin Pie Spiced Chai from New England Emporium

As a non-coffee drinker (can you believe it?), chai lattes have always been my go-to beverages at coffee shops and cafes. When iced, they’re incredibly refreshing. When served hot, they’re relaxing and comforting. One would never describe a chai latte as creamy, and yet the milk is one of the most important elements in giving it that satisfying taste and texture.

Another thing about chai? Its amazingly versatile. Pi has figured this out, as proven by the numerous chai based drinks on their menu, but nowhere in Middletown is it more evident than at New England Emporium, where one can get their chai latte flavored with vanilla, spice, raspberry, green tea, or as I learned today, pumpkin pie.

The pumpkin pie spiced chai latte is perfect for a rainy autumn day. The pumpkin flavor is very authentic, because it is created using real pumpkin milk.  It manages to be a very prominent element of the drink, but its definitely not overwhelming. The cinnamon of the chai meshes perfectly with the deep, earthy undertones of the pumpkin. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that pumpkin works better with chai than it does with regular lattes!

Take a pumpkin pie spiced chai with a scone or muffin (I went for a cranberry scone from Fusion Bakery), and you’ve got yourself a wonderful rainy day breakfast or snack.

Why You Should Go to Food Trucks on Thursday Nights

It seems like the majority of Wes students correlate the food truck scene with going out. After a long night of partying, there’s nothing better than a falafel, grilled cheese, or cupcake. From personal experience, I know this to be true.

Obviously, for those of us who go out on Thursday nights, this same mentality applies; however, for those of us who don’t, we somehow eliminate the food truck scene from our brains. It’s not that we aren’t awake  from 11 to 2 am, we definitely are. We’re slaving away on the final paragraphs of essays, finishing problem sets, and cramming for exams. Nor is the problem is  that we are not eating. Man, we’re eating alright! We’re making WeShop runs up the wazoo, jamming Cheez-Its  into our mouths as we finish the last chapters of our readings, sobbing over pints of ice cream because we still have six paragraphs left of  essays that are due tomorrow… Now, I know what you’re thinking, “why would I ever walk all the way to William Street when I’m freaking the f*%& out because of all the work I have?” Well dear friends, here is my perspective on the matter.

First of all, the truth is that you probably don’t spend more than forty-five minutes at a time actually doing work. In between, you’re checking Facebook, chatting with friends, using the bathroom, banging your head against the wall, whatever.. Now, if you added up all that time you spent lollygagging (which is a normal and completely acceptable element of the study-process), I’m sure that it would be at least 20 minutes.  In those 20 minutes, regardless of your location on campus, you could probably mange to walk down to William Street, grab a snack, and get back to your destination. But why? Why waste your time waiting on line for a Monger when you have so much to do?

Well, here’s the way I see it. Browsing Facebook is not a very satisfying break. Taking a walk around Sci Li? Not a very satisfying break. Furthermore, crackers? Boring. Chips Ahoy cookies? Ew, why? If you sacrificed a little Facebook browsing time and instead took a walk down to William Street, here’s what you would accomplish:

1. You’d be getting a little exercise (taking walks has been scientifically proven to amelioriate academic performance. It increases the circulation in your brain, thereby improving your focus.)

2. You’d be getting fresh air, which acts to rejuvenate and stimulate an exhausted mind.

3. Studies have shown that it is best to do work in designated  areas. That way, your brain knows that when you’re in the library, it’s time to study. Taking a break away from your “study area” means that once you get back, you will assume the mindset that it’s time to focus back in and get things done. Your brain will register your time away as a real break, and when you get back, it will be refreshed enough to work for a longer period of time without needing to rest.

4. You’d be eating something delicious, and probably a lot more fulfilling than crackers.(According to the Purdue University Health Center, eating real meals as oppose to snacks while studying keeps your energy up. The best meals include protein and carbs. Um, grilled cheese anyone?)

5. Eating desserts (like NoRA cupcakes) actually trigger endorphins in your brain. If there’s ever a time to get that extra boost of happiness, it’s when you’re studying, amirite?

Going to a food truck on a night when you’re not necessarily going out is a great decision. It’s like a mini vacation. You’ll come back revitalized, refreshed, and full. If anyone needs a midnight snack, it’s the people who are doing homework, right?  Imagine all the calories you burn thinking! So next Thursday night, when you’re just itching to get out of that chair at Olin and you’re craving a midnight snack, go down to William Street and get a grilled cheese and a cupcake. Just try it, believe me. It’s a great way to live.

Get Your Fusion Baked Goods “A La Mode”-ed at Cold Stone

Imagine this:

A huge, fudgy brownie, with a crackly exterior dissolving into moist, chocolatey goodness. The ingredients? All top-notch. When was it made? Two hours ago. Where was it made? Fusion Bakery- one of our all-time favorite places in Middletown (and the world)

Now imagine this:

Freshly made ice cream that was prepared from scratch this morning. It’s creamy, slightly chewy, and manages to be thick and indulgent while remaining incredibly light. The flavor is perfect because the proportions are meticulously executed using the best of ingredients. Yep, they don’t call Cold Stone super premium for nothin’

What if you could put these two things together? What if you could buy a delicious baked good at Fusion Bakery, take a 15 second walk to Cold Stone which is right next door, and have them “a la mode” it for you for $1.00?

This but except with a handcrafted brownie (or other product) from a top notch bakery

What if that $1.00 went to the Make A Wish Foundation, which raises money for children with cancer?

Yes, this is real life. This Friday, November 9th, from 12:00 to 6:00, Fusion and Cold Stone will be coming together to bring you the ultimate dessert extravaganza. The $1.00 you pay to get your baked good “a la mode”-ed will go directly to the Make A Wish Foundation. Seems like the opportunity of a lifetime to us.

See you there!
